This week, CNN’s Jake Tapper discusses Hillary Clinton’s false claim that FBI Director James Comey said her public statements about her handling of classified emails were “truthful.”
At a July 7 House Oversight Committee hearing, Comey told Congress, “There was classified material emailed,” when he was specifically asked about Clinton’s statements. That contradicted Clinton’s statements that she, as secretary of state, did not send or receive classified email on her private server.
Comey did tell committee members during the hearing that “we have no basis to conclude she lied to the FBI.” But when asked whether Clinton had been truthful with the American public, Comey responded, “That’s a question I’m not qualified to answer. I can speak about what she said to the FBI.”
