This week, CNN’s Jake Tapper, with the help of FactCheck.org, fact-checks Sen. Ted Cruz’s claim that he and Sen. Bernie Sanders are alike when it comes to raising campaign funds.
Cruz, a Republican presidential candidate, said that he and Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, are both “outsiders” who “don’t find our fuel in bundlers and special interests. But rather directly from the people.” That comparison is a bit of a stretch.
Unlike Sanders, Cruz has a network of super PACs, which can raise unlimited amounts of money from wealthy donors, working to elect him as president. Cruz’s campaign committee also offers “bundling benefits” based on how much fundraisers bring in to the campaign.
