FactCheck Mailbag, Week of Jan. 4-Jan. 10

This week, readers thought we were too tough on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and too easy on House Republicans.

In the FactCheck Mailbag, we feature some of the e-mail we receive. Readers can send comments to editor@factcheck.org. Letters may be edited for length.

Too Tough

I’m really disappointed in the tone and the lack of substance in your hit piece on Nancy Pelosi, ["Pelosi Pablum on ‘Fiscal Discipline,’ " Nov. 10]. You took [Federal Reserve Chairman Ben] Bernanke’s quotes out of context and failed to note that the economy can’t endure any cut backs in government spending right now. I used to hold your web site up as a model of neutrality and journalistic integrity. I don’t think I’ll be doing that anymore.

Not Tough Enough

In your recent article ["A ‘Job-Killing’ Law?," Jan. 7], the paragraph starting, "Republicans have a point," may be being overly generous to them. Even if some proposed cuts are backed out (as seems likely), it is unlikely that all of them will be backed out. Repeal means backing out all of the cuts so it is still going to be worse for the deficit than the status quo.

The factually accurate point would be "we’ll really be increasing the deficit less than it might appear at first glance."
